Sailing World names Reed editor
NEWPORT, R.I. – World Publications has promoted Dave Reed from managing editor to editor of Sailing World magazine, according to a statement from the company Wednesday.
John Burnham, Sailing World’s previous editor, who has been named editorial director, has high praise for Reed.
“Dave has been instrumental in our award-winning rise in editorial quality,” Burnham said. “He has a knack for presenting entertaining and often inspirational stories and photos about professional and elite-level racing. As a diehard J/24 and Laser sailor, he also understands what motivates our readers to become better at the sport and the importance they place on fast boats and equipment.”
For the past five years, Reed served as managing editor of Sailing World. He first joined the crew of the magazine and its sister title, Cruising World, in 1993 during an internship. In his tenure since, he has worked on Sailing World’s specialty publications and directed Boat of the Year competitions as he evolved his role at the magazine itself.
A native of Newport, he was brought up through the ranks of the Newport Yacht Club’s junior sailing and racing programs. Reed has raced J/24s for nearly 20 years and Lasers for nearly 15 years, crewing on a variety of boats.
“It doesn’t seem that long ago that I walked into the offices of Sailing World and thought this is the life for me: to make a living by writing about what I love to do,” Reed said. “Now here I am taking the helm. It’s an exciting time to lead a top-shelf team of editors as we deliver the quality content racing sailors expect, and build a stronger presence on the web.”
Burnham’s promotion to editorial director coincides with last week’s announcement of Burnham becoming the editor of Cruising World. He now is responsible for the editorial vision of both titles.
