South Carolina’s boating industry growing
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – Two boating industry manufacturers based in South Carolina’s Dorchester County are planning to grow their operations this year, according to a recent article in The Post and Courier, Charleston.
Selden Mast, a sailboat mast, boom, rigging and sailing accessories manufacturer, is adding 10,000 square feet to its 30,000-square-foot plant, which will result in the addition of five or six new employees, the newspaper reported. The company currently employs 23 workers at its Summerville location.
“This has proven to be a good location for us because of the available and trainable labor force,” Selden Mast General Manager Tom Sharkey told the paper. The company also has received a tax credit from the county “to assist with engineering associated with the expansion,” the newspaper reported.
Another Dorchester County employer – Scout Boats – will hire 50 new workers as part of a $5.5-million expansion of its boat building plant, for a total of 120 employees.
