IMI charter member dies

Captain Bruce O. Tobiasson, a charter member, former director, treasurer and promoter of the International Marina Institute, died on Feb. 3, 2010, in Medfield, Mass. He was 66.
 
According to the Association of Marina Industries, which manages IMI, Tobiasson had been the owner and chief engineer of Waterfront Design Associates since 1983 and many of his designs became standard practices in marinas worldwide.

He was a contributing author to “Planning Design Guidelines for Small Craft Harbors” published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and his book “MARINAS and Small Craft Harbors” was published in 1991 and revised in 2000.

Tobiasson was a frequent lecturer and instructor in IMI programs and shared his experiences during 45 years as a marina design engineer with many current Certified Marina Managers.
 
During his career, he received recognitions including the IMI Outstanding Achievement Award and honorary life membership and the University of Wisconsin’s Outstanding Lecturer Award. He was a guest instructor at the Maine and Massachusetts Maritime Academies, University of Wisconsin-Madison annual marina course, University of Rhode Island Sea Grant programs, and conferences in Australia, Singapore, Brazil, New Zealand, and United Kingdom.
  
Tobiasson is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan, his daughter Kristina and husband Christian Elias, granddaughter Madison, and brother, Wayne N. Tobiasson.
 
A memorial will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Coast Guard Academy Memorial Chapel, 15 Mohegan Avenue, New London, Conn.
