Garelick Manufacturing co-founder dies

ST. PAUL PARK, Minn. — H. Joe Garelick, chairman of the board of marine products maker Garelick Manufacturing, died Dec. 8, according to a release from the company. He was 85.

Joe Garelick and his brother, Saul, started the company 57 years ago in the back of an appliance store in St. Paul. The company’s first product was a lightweight aluminum marine boarding ladder. It was designed with twin gunwale hooks that made it easier and safer for boaters, water skiers and swimmers to climb aboard their boats. That basic style ladder is still in use today.

In 1998, both Joe and Saul were elected to Minnesota’s North Central Marine Trade Association’s Hall of Fame.

Garelick is survived by his wife, Eileen; sons David and Rick; and two grandchildren.
