B&G, Simrad announce new VHF radios with AIS capabilities

B&G announced the release of its first VHF radio with a fully integrated Class B AIS transceiver, the V60-B VHF radio. For the first time, a VHF radio can transmit your vessel’s position over AIS. The V60-B has a large screen, intuitive interface, built-in AIS Class B transceiver, a front-mountable design for easy installation and optional wireless handsets with inductive charging.

The AIS transceiver built into the V60-B can receive position data from other vessels like the original V60 but is also capable of sharing its position with nearby AIS-equipped vessels, improving situational awareness and collision avoidance.

Position data of other vessels is viewable on the V60-B screen and can be overlaid on top of a chart or radar through a compatible multifunction display over NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000.

Similarly, Simrad Yachting also released a VHF marine radio with AIS transmit and receive capability, the Simrad RS40-B.

The RS40-B features wireless handset capability, removable fist microphone, Class D DSC functionality, built-in GPS and a Class B AIS Transceiver.

The integrated Class B AIS transceiver in the RS40-B can receive position data from other vessels like the original RS40, but is also capable of sharing its position with nearby AIS-equipped vessels, improving collision avoidance in crowded waterways. Position data of other vessels is viewable on the Simrad RS40-B screen or can be overlaid on top of a chart or radar through a compatible multifunction display over NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000.

Both units are expected to start shipping in June 2019.
