Bahia Mar redevelopment passes important step
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale city commissioners gave initial approval to the $250 million plan to redevelop the Bahia Mar hotel and marina complex, according to a report in the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Redevelopment plans include a new five-star Waldorf-Astoria, a renovated Bahia Mar hotel, a waterfront park and a permanent home for the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which has been held at Bahia Mar since 1976.
Although a key first step for the developers of the project, LXR Resorts, the Sun Sentinel reports significant issues still need to be resolved, including necessary rezoning of the area, development restrictions and negotiating a lease for the city-owned property.
The developers also look to negotiate a permanent deal with the boat show, which is an important consideration for city leaders looking to keep the event in the Fort Lauderdale area.
City commissioners will take a final vote on the rezoning in two weeks.
