Westlawn to launch 75th anniversary in Miami

EDGEWATER, Md. – The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology is preparing to kick off its 75th anniversary year during the Miami International Boat Show. The school will host a reception Feb. 17 at the Bass Museum of Art, which will include an awards ceremony, Westlawn said in a release yesterday.

During this event, Westlawn will be highlighting the “art of yacht design” by featuring the designs of its alumni in a gallery setting. There will also be an awards ceremony, which will include the induction of a “to be announced” designer into a newly established “Designers Hall of Fame.”

“This year is a huge milestone for our school,” said Dave Gerr, director of Westlawn. “Our students and graduates not only go on to become designers, but they work as marine surveyors, brokers, boat builders and manufacturers, production managers, production design researchers, instructors at institutions of higher learning, in the boating safety departments of the Coast Guard, and even directors of standards organizations. This is why we are so excited to not only be celebrating the school’s history, but how Westlawn has contributed to the industry as a whole through our students.”

All small craft and yacht designers, and design firms that would like to lend their support and/or attend the celebration are encouraged to contact Westlawn at westlawn@abycinc.org or by calling (410) 956-7100.
