NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Actor John Wayne’s yacht, The Wild Goose, is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The yacht is currently owned by Hornblower Cruises and docked in Newport Harbor. A plaque stating its historic designation is now on the boat’s first deck.

The boat was built for use as a minesweeper in World War II. Wayne purchased it in 1962 for $116,000.

“In regards to the Wild Goose making the National Registry, we’re very, very pleased,” Kevin Lorton, general manager of Hornblower Cruises, said to the OC Register. “We believe this recognition appropriately identifies the boat’s strong local, regional and national significance with its ties to Mr. Wayne and its original service in the military.”

Any future modifications to the boat will have to go through review by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and a state historic preservation officer.
