Mercury selects partner to market Mercalloy
FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Mercury Castings and Alcan Inc. have reached a joint marketing and manufacturing agreement in principal to globally sell and distribute Mercalloy, a patented family of alloys developed for the die cast and permanent mold industries.
Mercury Castings is a part of Mercury Marine, which uses Mercalloy in the manufacture of aluminum propellers and the engine drive shaft housings of Verado, the company’s flagship outboard propulsion system.
“The joint-commercialization of Mercalloy will offer existing Alcan die-casting customers a new high-value product range and application opportunities,” said Jean-Francois Laplante, director, North American Foundry Products, Alcan Primary Metal Group. “Alcan will make, sell and distribute Mercalloy through its existing domestic and global distribution network.”
Mercury Castings developed Mercalloy as a low porosity alloy. Mercalloy feeds better during solidification than traditional die cast alloys due to the reduction of iron, as well the addition of strontium, according to Mercury’s press release. The modified eutectic structure of the low iron alloys – it melts at a relatively low temperature – also provides significant improvements to as-cast and heat-treated ductility.
“Mercalloy exhibits exceptional strength, ductility and part integrity, and through Alcan’s global reach and technical excellence, we will be able to introduce Mercalloy into markets beyond the marine industry, such as automotive, aerospace structural, and agricultural vehicles,” said Dave Olson, Mercury Castings general manager.
