Author to speak at The Landing School graduation

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — The Landing School reports that New York Times best-selling author Matthew B. Crawford will be the commencement speaker for the 32nd annual graduation and christening ceremony on June 11.

“Crawford will address more than 60 graduating students as they begin their new careers in the marine industry,” the school said in a statement. “As the author of Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work, Mr. Crawford is considered a trailblazer among modern professionals in the hands-on mechanical trades.

This is the first group to graduate from The Landing with a two-year Associate of Applied Science in Marine Industry Technology degree. The two-year program was accredited in 2009. Other students will receive certificates in Wooden Boat Building, Composite Boat Building, Yacht Design and Marine Systems.

“Mr. Crawford is the ideal individual to congratulate and embolden the graduating class as they celebrate their academic achievements and prepare for their new careers,” said Robert DeColfmacker, president of The Landing School. “We are honored to have a renowned writer who understands the mission of The Landing School provide words of encouragement and advice on this monumental day.”

Crawford was selected by staff, faculty and student and will arrive prior to commencement to meet student and work with them in the shop.
