John Stewart, Jr. dies suddenly

GUILFORD, Conn. – John Stewart, Jr., who retired in 2003 after 23 years with manufacturers’ representative firm Ocean Marketing, died suddenly at his home Saturday, Ocean Marketing said in a statement yesterday. He was 63.

“John was my business partner and friend,” said John Thommen, Ocean Marketing CEO. “Even in retirement he continued to be a mentor to so many people in the marine industry. We will all miss him greatly.”

Stewart received a bachelor’s degree from Roger William College in Bristol, R.I., He was a yacht broker with Martin Bird Associates in Annapolis, Md., for 5 years. From 1980 to 2003 he was Ocean Marketing’s vice president. He raced in the Newport-Bermuda race nine times and was the director of safety at sea seminars for 25 years. He was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Cruising Club of America, Hospice Regatta event chair and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Stewart and three sons; John Stewart, III, Charles Stewart and Peter Stewart. Funeral services will be held Oct. 10 in Annapolis.
