Malibu patents hydrofoil design

MERCED, Calif. – Malibu Boats was recently awarded a patent for its Power Wedge, an automatic hydrofoil that adjusts the attitude of the boat, as well as displacing the hull to modify the shape of the wake at each different foil position, the company reported in a recent release.

The company was awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,140,318 for the Power Wedge design, which allows boat drivers to tailor the pull specifically for the athlete in tow. The driver can move the Power Wedge to as much as 1200 pounds of displacement with the push of a button or back the wake down to as little as 400 pounds of displacement.

Malibu’s Chief Engineer, Danny Gasper, invented a powered hydrofoil in 2005 that, offered on Malibu boats during the 2006 model year, became the Power Wedge, which the company says is its No. 1 requested option. This success spurred Gasper and Malibu Boats to seek a patent on the design.
