New NC boat builder opens its doors

LELAND, N.C. – Southport Boat Works launched its boat building business in Brunswick County, N.C. yesterday, and is already planning to grow from the 51 people it currently employs to 250 employees over the next 18 months, reported The Sun News in an article today.

Though the company originally expected to start building boats in mid-summer, it now says its first fiberglass sport fishing boat will be finished by Sept. 15, in time to be sent to the Norwalk Boat Show, according to the newspaper.

Southport’s dealer network currently consists of 19 dealerships on the East Coast, two of which are located in North Carolina, the newspaper reported.

The boat builder was given many incentives to move to Brunswick County, according to the newspaper. They include a $1,000 tax credit for each new job it creates, $50,000 for start-up costs from the county, plus another $50,000 from the Brunswick Economic Development Corp. and $15,000 in energy credits from Progress Energy.
