Yacht yard fire destroys more than 50 boats

OSTERVILLE, Mass. – Approximately 100 firefighters arrived at the Crosby Yacht Yard in Cape Cod last night to fight a blaze that ultimately destroyed over 50 boats being stored for the winter, according to multiple news reports.

The fire ate its way through three large boat storage sheds, a smaller building and a rack of boats, news agencies reported.

Gregory Egan, who told reporters he was the owner of the yard, said it was founded in 1850.

Several explosions emanating from the buildings during the fire were believed to have been caused by flammable materials used to repair and maintain the boats, according to the news reports.

Mashpee Fire Chief George Baker told reporters that the three large sheds measured 128 by 50 feet, 260 by 82 feet and 150 by 50 feet. The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of this morning. No injuries were reported.
