BOSTON — SAIL Magazine appointed Tom Varley Jr. as its Western regional manager, the company said in a statement Friday. He will be responsible for working with clients on their advertising for SAIL, BoatWorks and the Sailboat Buyers Guide.
Varley’s territory includes California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, the Mountain states and Texas. The addition of a sales office on the West Coast will help SAIL strengthen its services to sailing businesses in the region, according to the company.
Varley has logged over 18,000 sailing miles as part of a delivery crew working for Wilson Yacht Delivery over the past four years, including a trans-Atlantic voyage. Prior to this, Varley worked as an outdoors feature writer for The World, a newspaper in Coos Bay, Ore., and was the business manager for his own music company.
As a newspaper writer and photographer at The World, Varley covered sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving and sea kayaking. His education in marketing at Evergreen State College and publishing experience together with running his own business give him the background to step into his new position at the magazine, the company stated.
“Tom has an incredible understanding of the importance of branding and advertising and a terrific knowledge of the sailing industry,” said Tanya Faw, advertising director. “He’s a welcome addition to the SAIL team and will be an asset to our western regional clients.”
