Yacht tax break moves through Texas legislature
AUSTIN, Texas — On April 29, the Texas House Ways and Means committee approved a tax break for yachts.
House bill 2187 was passed with a vote of 8 to 3. It was proposed by Rep. John Davis, R-Houston, and is based on a similar statute in Florida.
According to the original language in the bill, the sales tax on a boat cannot exceed $15,625. According to a report in the San Antonio Express News, the maximum tax was increased to $18,000; the same as Florida’s maximum. This does not apply to vessels used for commercial shipping. The law could take effect on Sept. 1, 2011.
The bill now goes to the house.
