Bain Capital funds to acquire German yacht builder

GIEBELSTADT and MUNICH, Germany – Funds advised by Bain Capital Beteiligungsberatung GmbH, Munich, have signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100 percent of the shares of Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH, based in Giebelstadt / Würzburg, the investment firm and the company’s founder and long-time managing director Winfried Herrmann reported in a recent statement. The acquisition is expected to be completed on July 31.

In addition to a further strengthening of the Giebelstadt location, future plans for the boat builder include expanding the international dealer network and opening up new markets abroad.

The company’s current management team with general manager Rudolf Müller and sales director Mike Reuer will continue to operate the boat building firm, but will be complemented over the next few months, it was reported. Upon completion of the acquisition, Herrmann will withdraw from active management and accompany the further development of the company as a member of its advisory board. Yachtagentur Josef Meltl will maintain its long standing successful cooperation with Bavaria Yachtbau as one of the leading dealers for Bavaria sailing yachts, the company said.

The German yacht building firm is not Bain Capital’s first foray into the boating industry. The investment firm currently holds an investment in Bombardier Recreational Products, a producer of jet skis, sport boats and outboard motors.

Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH produces about 3,500 sailing and power yachts per year with a staff of approximately 620 and sales of approximately EUR 271 million. Completion of the sale is contingent upon regulatory approvals by the antitrust authorities.
