Westrec Marinas to celebrate National Marina Day

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With National Marina Day fast approaching, Westrec Marinas has become the latest company to join in the festivities, Westrec said in a statement yesterday. The fourth annual National Marina Day will take place Saturday.

“This day is very important in showing existing boaters and new boater’s safe activities and clean marina standards, while benefiting local charities,” said Gary Groenewold, Westrec’s vice president, southern area.

Westrec’s Harbour Towne Marina in Dania Beach, Fla., will host a National Marina Day barbecue and educational programs open to the public including Clean Marina information and education, American Maritime Officers Star Center safety demonstrations, free Coast Guard Auxiliary safety inspections and junior angler fishing clinic and derby. Brass Hat Diving Society will educate attendees on the new and the old style of diving as well as how to get involved with commercial diving as a profession.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct courtesy marine vessel examinations between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Westrec’s Hall of Fame Marina. The exam is free and if the vessel passes the exam the boat will receive a decal and may be eligible for a discount on the vessel’s insurance. There will be a barbecue and the marina will allow free dockage for the day for any vessel interested in participating. The fire department will be bringing the fire fighting cannon boat and the Broward Sheriff’s Office will be conducting tours of its 19’ Stratus vessel.

Westrec’s Haulover Marine Centre has teamed up with Dade County Parks for the day. At Crandon they will be sponsoring a lunch for the volunteers cleaning the shoreline around the park and marina. From 10:00 a.m. until 2 p.m., other activities will include Luxury Yacht Charters hosting rental boat tours, dragon boat rides and a fish fry from Café Azul.
