Summit planned for South Florida marine industry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Marine Industries Association of South Florida, Marine Industries Association Palm Beach County, The Marine Council, The Miami River Marine Group and several Monroe County Marine Interests are uniting to formulate a regional approach to the future of the South Florida marine industry at this year’s Annual Marine Summit, organizers reported in a release today.

The event will be held on Oct. 4 at the Broward County Convention Center. Its theme will be “The Waterline Doesn’t Stop at the Countyline” and participants will consider the issues of the recreational boating industry from a regional perspective.

Speaking on behalf of the Summit steering committee, which is comprised of the leaders of the organizations, Frank Herhold, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida said, “Uniting as an industry to discuss the challenges we face and develop coordinated strategies for Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe Counties is critical to protecting our future.

“It has often been said that boating is the lifestyle of South Florida, but what is largely unknown is that family recreational boating represents a huge $13.6 billion economic impact and is responsible for over 160,000 jobs. The Annual Marine Summit will help us develop our priorities for the coming year and outline the next steps for our organizations going forward.”

The format for the Summit will include a General Session with remarks from several county and city governmental officials on the question “What does the marine industry mean to my community, and how can we best secure its future?”

There will also be break-out/discussions sessions by county. Local leaders from the various counties along with others from key municipalities will be to participating. Discussions will center on the importance of the marine industry to the local economy, community and lifestyle, as well as priorities and strategies for protecting the future of the marine industry.
