Washington boat builder considers expansion

COUPEVILLE, Wash. — Nichols Brothers Boat Builders may expand to a second location, noting that an Oak Harbor location could create 100 new jobs within the company.

Nichols Brothers, which builds a variety of steel- and aluminum-hull boats ranging from catamarans to military vessels, wants to increase its sales by putting out more bids for Washington ferries. It currently does not have enough room at the existing site.

The expansion proposal calls for building temporary structures on the Navy’s Seaplane Base. It is also considering other locations in Everett and Bellingham, according to a story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Company officials said any new location needs to be nailed down by spring 2012. Officials also emphasized that any new operation would be an expansion; it is not looking to move out of its current location.
