Cape Cod wind farm promoted as tourist attraction

HYANNIS, Mass. — Planned wind turbines off the coast of Cape Cod could become tourist attractions, as tour boat operators add the high-tech windmills to their itineraries.

Cape Wind Associates and ferry operator Hy-Line Cruises have made an agreement to run guided tours through the wind farm. Cape Wind Associates hopes to build a 130-turbine operation. Plans are to offer the tours during construction of the project, as well as after completion.

Hy-Line Cruises initially opposed the turbine project, calling it a navigational hazard, according to a blog post in MassMarkets. Now, Hy-Line calls the wind farm a “world-class tourist attraction” and will consider using a “green vessel” with a hybrid engine for the tour. The company is considering Massachusetts boat builders in this project.
