Honda Marine: Decades of Leading Engine Technology

From automobiles and motorcycles to power equipment and outboard engines, the Honda name is synonymous with a proud legacy of technological innovation and leadership. Working to change the shape of the marine industry, Honda introduced its first four-stroke outboard in 1964, and in 1971 added the 75 TWIN and 45 TWIN to its lineup. By 1988, Honda had a full complement of outboard engines and offered the industry’s first full line of four-stroke outboards – long before other outboard manufacturers realized the advantages of the clean, reliable power plants and followed suit.

The world’s largest engine manufacturer, Honda sold nearly 20 million units globally across all product lines in 2006. This high production volume, coupled with the company’s deep level of experience and commitment to precision manufacturing techniques, has allowed Honda to remain the leader in 4-stroke engine technology.

Engineers work to ensure that every Honda outboard model – ranging from 2 to 225 horsepower – sets the standard for fuel efficiency and ease of operation while staying true to the core Honda attributes of durability, quality, reliability and quiet operation. Additionally, Honda Marine’s full line of current production models meets rigorous California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star standards, ensuring their availability and regulatory compliance in all 50 states.

Honda continually improves its marine engine line by incorporating technologies from its highly advanced automotive and racing heritage. In order to maximize power output and durability, Honda Marine outboards are based on the sophisticated technology derived from Formula I and Indy cars, racing motorcycles and street vehicles. In addition, many Honda Marine outboards include exclusive technological features found in the company’s most popular automobile engines including the Honda Accord, CR-V, Element and Civic.

The unparalleled performance, power and reliability of the Honda Marine 4-stroke engine line is attributed to a number of exclusive technological features such as Honda’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™). First debuting in the high-performance Acura NSX sports car, VTEC™ technology has since been integrated into the designs of the BF225, BF150 and BF90 marine engines, providing these flagship models a unique blend of power, torque and efficiency at any speed.

VTEC™ works to vary the lift and duration of the intake valve opening to deliver optimal performance at both low and high rpm, resulting in peak performance at all speeds. The technology provides a broad, flat torque curve and smooth power delivery throughout the engine’s entire operating range, allowing the operator to enjoy both outstanding performance and impressive fuel economy.

Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™), Dual-Stage Induction, Lean Burn Control, 3-Way Cooling and a 4-Front Corrosion Protection System are just a few of the innovative design components that combine to deliver on Honda Marine’s promise of excellent power and durability.

Honda Marine also offers an industry first 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty. The program offers true Honda factory backing in comparison to outsourced, extended service contracts often provided by other manufacturers. Currently available on Honda engines ranging from the BF40 through the BF225, coverage for the True 5 limited warranty is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Honda Marine is proud to lead the industry and set the standard for excellence with new innovations, products and design enhancements. As a recipient of the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 from the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), Honda sets the industry standard for customer satisfaction.

Honda Marine also believes that ultra-low emission levels are not only possible, but also are necessary to protect our global waterways. In fact, all models currently in production have secured a 3-Star rating for meeting the rigorous California Air Resource Board’s standards for 2008.

As a responsible member of society determined to help preserve the global environment, Honda makes concerted efforts to contribute to human health and preservation of the global environment in each phase of its corporate activities and to staying at the forefront of such endeavors.

The Honda Marine advantage is ingenuity at its best. Consumers everywhere see it at the fuel pump, hear it on the water and feel it with superior performance.
