U.S. Coast Guard,U.S. Power Squadrons increase safety efforts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS) have reached an agreement to increase coordinated safety efforts that broaden the cooperated efforts in vessel examination, public affairs and education.

In 2010, there were more than 4,600 accidents and 670 deaths recorded by the U.S. Coast Guard. These two groups are hoping that with increased cooperation and boater education, these numbers will fall over the coming years.

“With this cooperative effort we will reach out to the growing population of recreational boaters providing needed training and vessel exams to keep them safe on the water,” said Jim Vass, Auxiliary National Commodore, in a release by the groups.

The USPS and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will focus on increase safety through vessel examinations, boater education, and public boater safety awareness events.
