Update from the National Working Waterfront effort

PORTLAND, Maine — In September, 2010, a group at the Working Waterway & Waterfront Symposium decided to form a national coalition to advance and promote the nation’s working waterways and waterfronts and to provide information and solutions to related issues and problems.

The formation of that national coalition is starting to take shape, with 12 interested parties exploring the questions surrounding the issues and the function of a coalition. The group will convene facilitated sessions to continue the coalition formation process.

Three main areas of focus, or work, for the national coalition were identified: advocacy and policy; education/outreach; and research. The working group envisions two tracks: one focused more on policy and advocacy, and the other focused more on research and education.

Members of the working group include: Mark Breederland, Michigan Sea Grant; Jim Connors, Retired, formerly Maine Coastal Program; Hugh Cowperthwaite, Coastal Enterprises, Inc.; Kristen Grant, Maine Sea Grant and UMaine Cooperative Extension; Dan Hellin, Urban Harbors Institute, UMass Boston; Jennifer Litteral, Island Institute; Tom Murray, Virginia Sea Grant; Matt Nixon, Maine Coastal Program; Stephanie Showalter, National Sea Grant Law Center; Natalie Springuel, Maine Sea Grant; Bob Swett, Florida Sea Grant; and Jack Wiggin, Urban Harbors Institute, UMass Boston.
