Associations promote marine careers
PORT CLINTON, Ohio and BROCKTON, Mass. — Both the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association and the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association continue to pursue programs they’ve established to increase the number of young people entering careers in the recreational marine industry.
LEMTA’s golf outing has historically been the largest source of income for the foundation, allowing it to grant more than $83,000 in scholarships to local students interested in the marine industry since 1998, according to the association. Sixteen students were awarded a record total of $10,300 this year.
LEMTA members had new options when it came to raising money at this year’s educational foundation fundraising event on July 22, the association reported. In addition to the usual golf outing, the new location at the Catawba Island Club allowed the organization to stage a fishing tournament.
“We had a lot of members that didn’t golf, but still wanted to participate,” said LEMTA President Ken Alvey. “The move to CIC, which is an association member club, allowed us to involve more people.”
Beginning Sept. 17 and running through Dec. 17, the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association/Massasoit Community College Jobs in Boating (JIB) Grant will hold another section of its introductory course focusing on career opportunities in the recreational marine trades from the perspective of marine technicians, the association reported in a recent statement.
The 45-hour Marine Trades Basic Certificate course, which is fully funded through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ JIB Grant, will be offered at the Canton campus of Massasoit, according to MMTA. Upon course completion, participants will be awarded a certificate, which the association said has a history of propelling individuals into entry level or more advanced recreational marine industry position.
