1. Coast Guard reauthorization passes committee

The U.S. House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure unanimously approved the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act of 2015 last week.

The bill, HR 1987, funds the Coast Guard for 2016 and 2017, and makes several changes to Coast Guard rules. Among those are bringing Coast Guard model year requirements in line with the industry’s June 1/July 31 negotiated standards and updating other regulations.

2. Boating fatalities up in New York

After declining for three years, New York boating fatalities increased in 2014, Newsday reported.

There were 27 deaths caused by boating accidents in 2014, up from 18 in 2013.
