Innovation recognized at 2014 Design Award METS

AMSTERDAM — A new steering traveler was named overall winner of the 2014 Design Award METS, presented this morning just before the official opening of the 27th Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) at the Amsterdam RAI.

The Jefa steering traveler, also named as a category winner in the deck equipment, sails, and rigging category, removes the need for bulky steering quadrants and is said to improve rudder feedback at the helm for twin-rudder, twin-wheel sailing yachts.

Additional category winners included: Glomex weBBoat 4G in the marine electronics and related software category; Kenyon International SiKen2 induction cooktop in the Interior equipment, furnishings, materials, and electrical fittings used in cabins category; Seabung in the marina equipment, boatyard equipment, and boat construction tools and materials category; Jefa Steering Traveler in the deck equipment, sails, and rigging category; and Exposure MOB search light in the lifesaving and safety equipment category; and Pro Installer EZ Mount Battery Switches in the Machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings category.

No winner was proclaimed in the clothing and crew accessories category, due to what was described as an unusually low number of entrants in what is normally a strong category.

“Developing new, well designed and innovative products is very difficult for relatively low manufacturing volumes,” said Bill Dixon, Chair of the DAME Awards Jury. “Nevertheless, many of the companies we recognized in this year’s nominations have looked at a problem, found a new and interesting way to solve it and come up with a confident solution. Others have found ways of making the boat builder’s life easier through better integration and ease of installation.”

More than 116 products were submitted for consideration in this year’s DAME awards, by marine parts and accessories manufacturers in 23 different countries.

The 27th METS runs through November 20 at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre, the Netherlands.
