Flats boat pioneer dies
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Bob Hewes, who developed and released the first production flats boat in 1969, died Sunday in Miami of bone cancer. He was 86.
Together with longtime friend and outdoors writer Bob Stearns, he developed the Hewes Bonefisher, a model for the many other flats boats that would follow.
Hewes is survived by his wife, Ida; daughters Debbie Feeger and Lorrie Wiborg; grandchildren Kim Davis, Jennifer Ginsberg and Krissy, Amy and Brian Wiborg; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Wednesday at Miami Shores Presbyterian Church. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Women’s Cancer Association at the University of Miami (wcaofum.org), c/o Bill Tenney, 1183 NE 99th St., Miami Shores, FL 33138.
