BWI elects new officers, director

WILMETTE, Ill. – Boating Writers International (BWI) members have elected three officers, reelected a director and the board has appointed another to fill a vacancy, it reported in a recent statement.

Officers elected to one-year terms are freelancer and technical editor Zuzana Prochazka, president; consumer and trade writer Lisa Knapp, 1st vice president; and writer and editor Glen Justice, 2nd vice president. New to the board is Alan Jones, a magazine writer, editor and photographer. Michael Sciulla, writer and marketing consultant, was reelected as a director for a three-year term.

Jones has been a full-time writer and editor for Boating World Magazine for 14 years and most recently a contributing editor for Sea Magazine. He writes the Editor’s Letter, engine column, all boat tests, serves as an on-camera personality as well as feature writer, humorist, and fishing enthusiast. Jones has been a judge for the NMMA Innovations Awards program and has been recognized eight times in the BWI annual writing contest. He will fill the seat previously held by Justice.

• Sciulla served as BWI president (2003-4) and is continuing as chairman of the Speaker’s Committee, which has put on a number of programs. He is the former editor/publisher of BoatU.S. Magazine.

• Prochazka is technical editor for Latitudes and Attitudes magazine and her work appears in a number of boating magazines and online venues. She earlier served as BWI’s 1st vice president and continues as the chairperson for the BWI New Products Committee.

Knapp writes for Dockwalk, Boat International U.S., Soundings Trade Only, Soundings and a number of other titles in print and online. She moves up from 2nd vice president and will continue focus on recruiting new members and sponsors for BWI events and the annual writing contest.

Justice is the founder of MadMariner.com, the daily online boating magazine where he currently serves as editor overseeing daily articles, features such as The Docking Game, and podcasts. Previously a director, he will continue to chair BWI’s Communications Committee, directing rollout of the organization’s new Web site.

Continuing as directors are Immediate Past President Kim Kavin, freelance writer and publisher of ChaterWave.com; Marilyn Mower, editor of Southern Boating and the Marine Business Journal; Lindsey Johnson, editor of Lakeland Boating magazine; and Alan Wendt, editorial director for Marine CEO magazine and publisher of custom lifestyle boating publications. BWI Executive Director Greg Proteau serves as secretary/treasurer of the board.
