Marine Tech Center gets fundraising co-chair

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Charles Industries, Ltd. President Joe Charles has agreed to co-chair the fundraising efforts for Broward Community College’s Marine Technology Center of Excellence, Charles Industries and Broward Community College said in a statement yesterday. The center is offering its inaugural class in marine engineering management and seamanship this spring.

Charles responded to the BCC Foundation’s call for a public/private investment of $3 million from industry and individual philanthropic leaders to renovate the 30,000 square-foot Marine Technology facility. The program was established to respond to the significant growth of Florida’s marine industry and the need for qualified employees in the sector.

Charles also is committed to recruiting students with physical, developmental and economic challenges. He has established a partnership with Shake-A-Leg Miami and a collaboration with the Boys and Girls Admiralty Club.

“This is my way of giving back,” Charles said.

To date, Charles has secured commitments from multiple companies who will be donating more than $500,000 worth of equipment ranging from electronic charts to a steering system.
