Virginia Sea Grant Program adds technical advisor
GLOUCESTER POINT, Va. – Wendy Larimer has been hired as the marina technical advisory specialist of the Virginia Sea Grant Program at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the program said in a press release Friday.
This full-time position became available after the state’s General Assembly allocated funding for Virginia’s expanding Clean Marina program. The position’s purpose is to oversee Virginia’s Clean Marina program, addressing the social, economic and environmental needs of the marina industry, while providing education on the marine environment and resources’ importance, sustainability and management.
Larimer last worked for the city of Wilmington, N.C. She was the city’s liaison to a variety of private and public organizations and citizens, managed the city’s docking program and created new programs and policies to enhance safety and to beautify the historic downtown area.
Previously, Larimer was with the North Carolina Marine Trades Services as a regulatory consultant. During that time, she started the state’s Clean Marina program, wrote the state’s manual for marinas, co-edited a monthly publication and coordinated the annual North Carolina Marine Expo.
Larimer has also worked as a marina manager, grant writer for pump out installations, and a marina permitting specialist, taking her from Rhode Island to South Carolina. She has a master’s degree in marine affairs from the University of Rhode Island.
