CANTON, Ga. – Marine technician George Vago of Hayward, Wis., was awarded the inaugural Harry Nowak Memorial Scholarship at the Association of Marine Technicians’ annual meeting in Orlando, AMTECH said in a statement Thursday. The scholarship honors Harry Nowak, a charter member and board member of AMTECH, who died in 2004.
The honor recognized Vago’s winning entry in a national essay competition, where he discussed the value of technical training in the vocation of marine technology. He will receive a $500 as the award winner.
Vago is an experienced technician and a student. He is employed at Earl’s Marine in Hayward, Wis., and is currently enrolled in the Marine Repair Technician program at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Ashland, Wis. He will use the award to help cover his tuition and expenses, and will graduate with a two-year technical diploma this spring.
