IYRS founder leaves board
NEWPORT, R.I. – Elizabeth Meyer, founder of the International Yacht Restoration School, will depart the school’s board of directors confident that her founding vision for the school is solidly in place, IYRS said in a release.
The vocational school and center for maritime restoration said it has entered a new chapter in its evolution as an organization.
“Elizabeth is an extraordinary visionary,” said Terry Nathan, president of IYRS. “In the early 90s, this campus was a tract of land with abandoned buildings, but she saw important possibilities that perhaps no one else saw. When you look at how far IYRS has come today, you realize how tirelessly dedicated Elizabeth is. IYRS has become part of the worldwide discussion on maritime restoration.”
Meyer founded IYRS in 1993 and served as chairman for the first 10 years. In 2003, she passed the chairmanship to David Pedrick of Pedrick Yacht Designs. From 2003 until currently, Meyer served on the Executive Committee of the IYRS Board of Trustees. In January 2004, IYRS hired a new president in Nathan, a businessman who had a proven track record in taking start-ups and turning them into growing companies.
“IYRS is today everything I could have hoped for and more,” said Meyer in a statement. “The board of trustees is an ever more impressive list, a great group to lead IYRS into the future. Our president and his staff could not be better. All in all, the future of IYRS has never been brighter.”
