Doris Colgate receives leadership award
MARBLEHEAD, Mass. – The 2004 Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award was presented to Doris Colgate, president and CEO of Offshore Sailing School, at an awards ceremony in Marblehead June 5, OSS said in a release today.
Sponsored by BoatU.S. and the National Women’s Sailing Association, the award was created in 1999 to “honor an individual who has earned a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women though sailing,” according to OSS.
Doris Colgate, who married OSS founder Steve Colgate in 1969, joined the school as its vice president in 1970, became president in 1978 and CEO in 2001. In 1990, she founded the National Women’s Sailing Association to create more awareness of sailing among women and avenues for women to build confidence and skills. That same year she spearheaded “You Can Sail Escapes” to provide all-women training programs. That program continues today in several locations, OSS said.
Colgate received the Betty Cook Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from Boating magazine and International Women in Boating in 1994 for her work in the marine industry. In 1996, she shared with Steve Colgate, the Sail magazine Industry Award for Leadership. She has been on the BOATU.S. National Advisory Council since 1997 and a member of the board of directors of Sail America, the sailing industry association, since 2000.
