Lariviere receives NMEA Lifetime Achievement Award

SEVERNA PARK, Md. — The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has named George Lariviere of Northern Airborne Technology as this year’s NMEA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, the association reported yesterday.

Lariviere was presented with the award at NMEA’s 2003 Annual Convention and Exposition at Sanibel Harbour Resort in Fort Myers, Fla., October 22-25.

The NMEA Lifetime Achievement Award honors outstanding living individuals who have improved the public good through the field of marine electronics, according to the association.

“George has had an enormous influence in the marine electronics industry over the past 32 years,” said Carol Sherburne, NMEA chairman. “Through his technical and design innovation, his leadership has resulted in a beneficial influence of regulatory bodies both national and international, thereby improving the use of marine electronic equipment for the good of the public.”

Lariviere started in the marine electronics industry more than 30 years ago with his own company, GEL Electronics. Initially, he then went to work for Brocks Electronics as a technician and before moving into sales. Brocks Electronics was purchased by EPSCO, which gave Lariviere the opportunity to have input into new marine electronics such as The XY Plotter and the first color fishfinders, as well as the opportunity to open the New Orleans office for EPSCO and introduce the GULF to marine electronics, the association stated.

Following these experiences, Lariviere moved to Koden as the U.S.A. general manager, where he visited Airmar looking for a special transducer that Coast Guard cutters could use when going through ice. Lariviere also worked with Alden Electronics, and later for Northern Airborne Technology. He has served as a director for the NMEA and has been chairman of RTCM for a number of years.
