Marine Trades Association of New Jersey Foundation announces 2019 SkillsUSA awards
The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) Foundation recently announced the winners of the 2019 SkillsUSA Marine Service Technology Contest.
Since 2006, the MTA/NJ Education Foundation has awarded nearly $25,000 to deserving students through scholarships and student awards.
Three vocational school students received medals competing in individual skill stations and a written test. The hands-on test stations included many aspects of 2-stroke and 4-stoke outboard, stern drive and inboard troubleshooting and repair. Students were tested on valve adjustment, boat systems wiring, ignition system troubleshooting, volt and ohmmeter use, water pump service, precision measuring and trailer service.
The written test included the above listed topics including diagnostics, service and repair of marine accessory items. Contestants were judged on safe work practices, cleanliness, organizational skills, accuracy, speed and completion of assigned tasks, worksheets and paperwork.
The awards were presented as follows: Gold Medal Winner: Matt Cardinal of Ocean County Vocational Technical School. Silver Medal Winner: Allen Cordano of Gloucester County Institute of Technology. Bronze Medal Winner: Tyler Goldsmith of Ocean County Vocational Technical School.
Each medalist was awarded a “tool of the trade” provided by the MTA/NJ Foundation.
In addition to scholarships and student awards, the MTA/NJ Foundation is aggressively working to address workforce issues through marine training reimbursements, industry certification courses, and education and training in the classroom and on the job for members and their employees. The MTA/NJ Foundation has provided over $10,000 for training since 2014.
