Marine engine manufacturers meet new CARB deputy chief

Representatives from the Engine Manufacturers Division Technical Committee recently met with Steve Cliff, the newly appointed deputy chief executive director of the California Air Resources Board.

In his role related to the marine industry, Cliff oversees both the El Monte and Sacramento program offices that regulate and certify exhaust and evaporative emissions from marine engines and recreational vessels.

Attending the Dec. 13. meeting were John McKnight, NMMA, Rich Waggoner, NMMA consultant, Jeff Wasil, BRP Evinrude, Mark Riechers, Mercury Marine, Carver Buis, Pleasurecraft Marine Engine Co., Jon Lowe, Pleasurecraft Marine, and Bob Alsip, Suzuki.

“The EMD members appreciated the opportunity to meet with Mr. Cliff and welcome him to his new position and we look forward to working with him to continue to design and deliver the cleanest recreational boats, engines and marine accessories to the California boating public,” said  McKnight, NMMA’s senior vice-president government affairs.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to introduce the committee and the marine industry to Cliff and congratulate him on his appointment.

During the meeting Cliff shared that in his spare time, he is an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and has been teaching boat safety courses for ten years.

The meeting focused on several engine related programs and projects that the EMD Technical Committee has been working on including emission certification fuel testing and auxiliary emission control devices.

Mike Miguel was in attendance for CARB as he heads up the boat builder evaporative emission certification program out of Sacramento. Staff from the El Monte office participated via conference call.
