Wisconsin Clean Marina program receives conservation award

The Lake Michigan Stakeholders will sponsor the annual Lake Michigan Champions of Conservation awards at Lake Michigan Day on Aug. 11 at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wis. The awards will honor and recognize the achievements of individuals and businesses who are initiating projects and programs to protect and enhance the lands and waters on Lake Michigan.

Among its winners is the Wisconsin Clean Marina program, part of the Wisconsin Marine Association, which was chosen as the 2017 organization champion. The program provides guidance, training and education to 21 marinas and 14 pledged to “keep Wisconsin’s waterways free of harmful chemicals, excess nutrients and debris,” collectively working towards best management practices. They recognize how minimizing pollution helps protect resources essential to their livelihoods – clean air, water and healthy fish and wildlife. General Manager Michelle Shrider of Washburn, Wis., serves as the organization’s chair, with Jon Kukuk of Marinette, Wis., owner and operator of Nestegg Marine, as co-chair.

Other winners include:

  • Wendy Lutzke of Manitowoc, Wis.
  • Cathy Pabich of Algoma, Wis.
  • Trout Springs Winery in Greenleaf, Wis.
  • S. Senator Tammy Baldwin
