Sun Safe Boating designates July Sun Safe Boating Month

Sun Safe Boating, an industry collaboration devoted to sun safety in recreational boating, has declared the month of July as “Sun Safe Boating Month” in a new month-long effort to raise awareness and encourage sun safe activities with recreational boaters. Sun Safe Boating Month will coincide with UV Safety Month in July and will become an annual awareness month.

The goal of Sun Safe Boating is to improve public awareness and reinforce the message that improved sun protection is critical to safety and enjoyment on the water. With the support of industry and association partners, the ongoing campaign promotes sun safety and educate boaters on how to be more sun safe.

At the heart of the campaign is a website designed to share information and resources for sun safety specific to boating. In addition to sun facts and safety tips, a “Tools to Use” page provides videos and photos with suggested captions for sharing on social media, including new “Sun Safe Boating Month” images.

Sun Safe Boating is also now included as a fact sheet in BoatBeats.org, a national online resource that provides media with accurate recreational boating information through a collaborative effort with the National Safe Boating Council, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard.

“In the heat of summer, July is the perfect time to reinforce the message that boaters need to be extra careful with sun protection and limit their exposure to harmful UV rays,” says Diane Seltzer, marketing director for SureShade. “As strong advocates for sun safety in the boating industry, SureShade is pleased to lead the Sun Safe Boating collaboration in the ongoing effort to educate boaters on the many ways they can be more sun safe.”

Founding partners of Sun Safe Boating include: SureShade (presenting partner), National Safe Boating Council, Sunbrella, Sun Safety Awareness Alliance, Waxhead Sun Defense and Mike Schmidt’s Winner’s Circle Charities. New partners for 2017 include Lakeland Boating, Get My Boat and Great Lakes Scuttlebutt.

Interested businesses and associations are invited to support the cause by sharing sun safety messages on social media using the hashtag #SunSafeBoating and #SunSafeBoatingMonth, or by joining as a supporting partner of the campaign at www.SunSafeBoating.com/partners.
