ABYC announces standards week, annual conference for January

The American Boat & Yacht Council has announced its eighth annual Standards Week, Jan. 9-13, 2017. Project Technical Committee (PTC) meetings and ABYC’s annual meeting will take place at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina.

Standards Week is a critical step in the development of ABYC standards. Participation in the process is encouraged from a diverse group, each with different perspectives and areas of expertise. Attendees learn what standards are being revised or newly considered and how it could affect the future of boating. This year, the PTC meeting topics include hull piping, electrical, fuel and ventilation, electrical components, hull performance, fire-fighting equipment and gas detectors, control systems and navigation lights.

Becky Smith, Sea Ray Product Development & Engineering Compliance Supervisor, believes that Standards Week is one of the most important events that people in our industry can attend.

“Not only are the current standards discussed, but participants also have the opportunity to ask questions about specific issues that arise during the design and construction of their models,” said Smith. “Everyone has the opportunity to provide input which can affect the industry standards covering their current and future product.”

ABYC’s annual meeting and cocktail reception will be held Jan. 9, 7-9 p.m. Attendees will hear about the organization’s latest news, and enjoy music, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails with industry colleagues.

“ABYC’s annual meeting is a perfect time to share successes, gain perspective about boating safety, and make new contacts,” said Kenneth Weinbrecht, president of Ocean Bay Marine Services Inc. “Repairers, technicians and surveyors can take advantage of this opportunity to be in the know and protect their work product.”

The events are free but registration is necessary. More information on Standards Week, ABYC’s annual meeting and the surrounding events can be found at www.abycinc.org/standardsweek.
