Key Biscayne files new complaint against city of Miami
MIAMI – The Village of Key Biscayne filed an amended complaint against the City of Miami on Wednesday night, the Miami Herald reports. The village has taken the city back to court in another effort to stop the Miami International Boat Show from moving to the Miami Marine Stadium.
Key Biscayne’s private attorney John Shubin filed an amended, 10-count complaint in circuit court. The complaint lists several reasons for why the village is seeking to stop the city from allowing the show to build a $23 million park and event space for the February show, including the allegation that the city’s charter required that Miami seek voters’ approval to sign a deal for the waterfront property.
The village first sued the city in February, but due to state law was required to stay the proceedings and seek an amicable resolution before litigating the matter. A deal was thought to be reached last week but the village backed out at the last minute.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association has called the latest complaint yet another attempt by the village to try to get its way with the city.
Show Manager Cathy Rick-Joule has affirmed this complaint will not derail any work to make the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin the home of the Miami International Boat Show in 2016 and beyond.
“As a treasured Miami tradition, the boat show is paramount to the local community and the entire recreational boating industry,” Rick-Joule said. “We look forward to upholding our reputation as a good neighbor and continuing to deliver $597 million in annual economic impact for the State of Florida while directly supporting 6,500 Miami-Dade County jobs at our new home at Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin.”
