Follow up: Club will wait to vote on female membership
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Motor Boat Club will not change the date it will vote on accepting women members, despite a message from the mayor saying the club may not be in compliance with the law.
The men-only private club on Lake Springfield had scheduled a vote on female members at a meeting in six months. It will stick to that schedule.
Mayor Mike Houston said that, because the club has a lease from the city, that its policy could be considered discriminatory. The club does not allow women as full members, but wives of members are allowed to use the facilities.
The vote was originally supposed to take place in early August, but was postponed for six months.
According to an article in the State Journal Register, at least one other private club on Lake Springfield was sent a similar letter from the city.
