Boat club to vote on female membership

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— The Motor Boat Club at Lake Springfield will put the question of female membership on its next ballot.

The men-only club, founded in 1933, is considering allowing female members as an answer to declining membership, according to an article in the State Journal-Register.

The club currently has 237 members, down by about 100 members in the past two years. The club blames the decline on the economy, not it’s membership rules.

The club allows women to use its facilities and take part in events, but women are not allowed to vote on club matters. A vote to allow female members failed in 2005.

Passage of the by-law change requires a two-thirds majority.
