Florida court debates definition of houseboat

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — It’s up to a federal circuit court in Atlanta to decide if a man’s former residence was a home or boat.

The decision could have tax implication, as a “floating vessel” would not be subject to property tax.

Fane Lozman says he was illegally evicted from a marina on charges that it was docked illegally. The boat was confiscated and destroyed.

According to an article at UPI.com, “If the appellate court upholds Riviera Beach’s win over Lozman, floating residence owners nationwide might be able to argue they should no longer pay property taxes if their structures are to be considered vessels.”
