Kennebunkport Marina adds boat club

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — A new concept is being launched at the Kennebunkport Marina: a boat club as an alternative to boat ownership.

Members of the new Kennebunkport Boat Club will have access to one of three Pro-Line powerboats throughout the season, according to an article on Seacoastonline.com. The boats will be outfitted and ready for use; members will pay the gas.

The club is hoping to attract members who got out of boating because of expense and upkeep. The concept is becoming more commonplace across the country, according to the article.

Membership in the Kennebunkport club is $5,000 up front, with a $1,000 security deposit. Monthly fees are $300. Prospective members must show some boating acumen, including knowledge of maritime rules and boat operation.

The marina is owned by Michael Shea, who purchased it in 2010.
