MIASF to host annual youth plywood regatta

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Marine Industries Association of South Florida will host the 15th Annual Plywood Regatta, scheduled for April 30 to May 1 at the Dania Beach City Marina.

Up to 40 teams will compete in the two-day boat-building event that introduces local youth and the community to the craft of boat building and recreational boating. Teams of middle school, high school and marine technical school students will attempt to build sea-worthy vessels on the first day by using simple hand-tools and only the supplied materials of plywood, 3M 5200 fast cure caulk and zip ties. Once the boats are complete students will then paint and decorate their boats.

On the second day, participants will compete in a fun-filled and friendly rivalry when the finished, decorated boats line up and race in a series of heats to determine an event champion.

All Plywood Regatta proceeds benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund. The aim of these programs is to encourage marine education and develop students’ interest in the marine industry.

“Plywood Regatta is such a unique event because it encompasses so many aspects of the marine industry from design to fabrication to painting. Participating in the event is a great way for these students, particularly those in the Marine Magnet and engineering programs, to get a taste of what careers they could eventually pursue in the marine industry after graduation,” said Melanie Daily, MIASF Public Relations and Events Coordinator.
