West Marine extends deadline for green product contest

WATSONVILLE, Calif. — West Marine recently extended the deadline for its second annual “Green Product of the Year” contest, according to a release from the company. The new deadline is Dec. 31.
 
West Marine hosts the contest as part of its company mission to reduce its impact on the environment, and will award a grand prize of $10,000 to the winner at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show.
 
“In an effort to include the new products that were showcased at IBEX and METS, we’ve extend the Green Product of the Year deadline to December 31, 2010,” Laurie Fried, chief sustainability officer for West Marine, said in the release. “We hope to increase the number of entries and be able to highlight green boating innovations at the Miami International Boat Show in February, 2011.” 
 
The entries will be judged on effectiveness, environmental impact, and degree of innovation.
 
The competition is free of cost and open to individuals, manufacturers, distributors and inventors of boating products.
