Mercury to return $1.6 million in tax relief to Oklahoma

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Now that Mercury Marine plans to remain in Wisconsin and migrate jobs from its Stillwater, Okla., plant to Fond du Lac, the company has said it will return tax relief it received from Oklahoma in a bid to keep the company there.

Mercury said it is working with county and state officials in Oklahoma to make an immediate payment for any benefits it has received under the legislation. The Stillwater News Press reported that the figure is likely to be around $1.6 million.

The legislation was signed into law June 1, but with jobs now set to move out of Oklahoma, Mercury no longer qualifies for the relief.

“With the decisions made last week around the consolidation of our under-utilized manufacturing capacity, it is unlikely that Mercury Marine will qualify for the criteria outlined by the spirit of the bill in terms of employment levels and the scale and scope of our operation in Stillwater,” Mercury President Mark Schwabero said in a statement.
