U. S. Power Squadrons debuts new trailering seminar

RALEIGH, N.C. — The United States Power Squadrons is launching a new two-hour seminar this summer designed to teach boaters trailering skills, the group reported this week.

The seminar, called “The Complete Guide to Trailering Your Boat,” covers choosing the right vehicle and trailer; launching and retrieving a boat; as well as equipping and maintaining a trailer, among other topics.

Events will be held at dealerships nationwide, with the USPS continuing to add seminar dates throughout the coming months. A list of seminar locations is available at the group’s Web site, USPS.org. Dealers interested in hosting one of the events can also contact USPS through the site.

Tom Kemp of the USPS marketing department said dealers can use the seminars to generate traffic and — potentially — sales.

“We want to help generate traffic for the dealers,” Kemp said. “And at the same time, we can do our show and tell where the actual equipment is located.”

Students who attend the seminar receive a “Trailer Seminar Notes” notebook for future reference, a copy of “The Complete Guide To Trailering Your Boat” as well as a 2009 towing guide produced by Boating Industry‘s sister magazine, Trailer Boats.

USPS said it costs dealers nothing to host an event.

“We provide our own experienced instructors as well as videos and slides,” Kemp said. “Dealers just have to provide the space.”

The course is certified by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and students receive a certificate of completion after finishing the seminar.

USPS is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching classes in boating safety, seamanship and related subjects.
