$17 million Gulfport harbor revitalization begins

GULFPORT, La. – Just three months shy of the four-year-anniversary of the destruction of Gulfport harbor by Hurricane Katrina, the city held a ceremony to kick off the $17-million Gulfport Small Craft Harbor revitalization project, according to an article published yesterday on WLOX.com.

In a little more than a year, Gulfport’s new harbor should sport 319 new boat slips, the article suggested. But it hasn’t come easily. It took Gulfport officials more than three-and-a-half years to obtain authorization from the Federal Emergency Management Administration to rebuild the harbor, according to WLOX.com.

“Rebuilding the boat slips is phase one of a project that will give the entire Jones Park area a makeover,” the article stated. “Phase two is adding a splash pad to the east side of Jones Park. City administrators expect that contract to be signed next month.”
